A new program I am implementing next year, to help those who have scars that they would like transformed into art....

I am excited to announce From Scars to Art! With this program I am giving a free 6 hr tattoo session to one lucky person every quarter starting in 2025! Do you have a masectomy scar, surgery scar, self harm scar, or any other scar that you have wanted to do something with, but just didn't know what or how to do it? Well this program is designed for you! Let me tell you a little about my experience and then we will go over requirements for the program and how to eneter.

For those who do not know me, my name is Sheryl Lake. I am an artist and I have been tattooing for

over 20 years now. I began my journey in learning how to cover scars with tattoos on my own. It isn't unusual for a client to come in with this request, but what I learned is that this is a task that should be left to those experienced with scar cover in tattooing. Why? You ask... Well scars come in all diffent shapes, sizes and textures. Each type of scar requires a differnt approach, with some taking a few sessions of layering the pigment into the skin. If you are too heavy handed on some scars the ink will travel quicly under the skin causing what we refer to as a blow out. Scarred skin can also require a little more pressure to get the ink to take, and even then may need to be gone over again to ensure the desired result. You have to know how long you have to let a scar heal before tattooing over it as well. These are all things I have learned and have taken the time to research myself, because I understand the need to cover something that can be a painful memory to some, and for others something that makes them feel less confident when they look in the mirror.

Covering a scar with a tattoo has transformative qualities. There is something to say about the rituals we take to begin a new chapter in life. For many tattooing something , whether it be significant, or merely decorative, helps to create a feeling of empowerment for those involved. Closing a chapter, closing a door, turning the page, rising form the ashes, these are all reasons why people choose to tattoo over their scars. Seeing how this simple act can trasform people's lives is the rerason why I am offering to donate my time to this service. I am also certified in paramedical areola tattoos, expanding my scar cover to restorartive work as well.

How do you enter, you ask?

This will be something that I may change up as I go but for now I will be creating a form that will ask the necesary questions to be sure you qualify for the tattoo. I will be asking for photos of the site area, how long you have been healing, and ideas you may be leaning towards or things you like. I always like to have a couple of images that are similar to the style you are looking for tattoo wise. From there I am happy with photos or illustrations to help translate your ideas. Most of the work I do as a tattooer, and this helps me to design something that you will love. If you are looking to do an areola or two, just let me know, as I am happy to include this as a scar cover.

I am going to start From Scars to Art on 1/1/2025, so let me know if you or someone you know would like to enter. Drawing for the winner of the first quarter will take place on 2/1/25. I will share any new information as I go!

Thank you for making this past year an amazing year, and here's to another amazing year!!!

Sheryl
